Development Careers for Civil Engineers

Hi guys,

Hoping to get some feedback from some vets in the real estate development arena. I am a civil engineer with 2 years experience developing large commercial industrial sites in Texas including the last half year managing projects. Ive done work for some of the big boys (Hines, Trammel Crow, etc) and do a lot of estimating, feasibility, design and permitting.

I’d like to move closer towards the development side (research prospective sites, directing/budgeting construction type roles) in a few years once my career progresses further. I’m still very young (24) and am hoping that over-achieving now will play a big role in making myself an attractive candidate. I might be sucking my own dick a little here so I’ll throw in that I don’t make a ton of money. Confident I’d need an MBA and a much broader skill set to be looked at by higher tier shops (not necessarily the god tier previously mentioned but big shops). Just wondering if any of you in large real estate development have seen anyone take a similar route and opinions on how valuable/marketable/applicable my skills as an engineer are for a role. Any thoughts or comments appreciated
