Do Recruiters Lie About Comp?
Title says it all here. Have never questioned the integrity of recruiters before, but had a call with a recruiter about a gig and the all-in comp seemed extremely high especially for the firm it was with. Not sure if the figures were accurate or not and not exactly trying to waste my time. Has anyone experienced this?
Like anything, there's good recruiters and there's bad recruiters. The good recruiters understand their business is ultimately a human relationship business and therefore tactics that may work in the short-term are often at odds with long-term success. The bad recruiters on the other hand may use short term tactics as a carrot to try to get a potential candidate to make a move. This is especially true now as many firms are handing out 5% - 10% y-o-y raises, making it that much more difficult to get someone to look at another opportunity.
So yes, I have seen what you described above used as a carrot. Then it is rug pulled and explained away to the tune of "that was the upper range for someone that met all their criteria and they're still very interested, but would want you to grow into the role and start at a more market rate for your experience." Either way, the only way you're going to find out is by carrying the conversation forward and seeing where it goes. Just set low expectations until you get an actual offer.
I haven't seen a recruiter lie about comp specifically, but I have generally found recruiters to be on the dishonest end of the honest-dishonest spectrum, willing to frequently bend the truth to the candidate and to the company they're recruiting for.
Yes and no
Yes because they work for the company hiring you, not you
No because they know the market and are driven by commission on each successful hire. The more you get paid, the higher their fee. The more you get paid, the more you're likely to move.
There will be a balancing act between those two. The client will want to low ball you, and the recruiter is hired to meet their client's demand while at the same time injecting a sense of reality to the clients numbers if the comp is low.
There are of course recruiters that lie and tell you the comp is super high but those recruiters don't last long because they ultimately don't close deals when the prospect realises the comp is way out of line with guidance. The end result is the candidate doesn't accept the offer, the client doesn't fulfil their seat and everyone's time is wasted.
Their fee is based off of base salary though to my knowledge. This role encompasses bonus basically being 100-150% of base, that’s my true concern here. I think the base that was stated is high, but in line with MF salaries at the moment
OK so?
If it's based off base, they still need a candidate hired irrespective if that base is 10k or 1m. They (respectable recruiters ) are therefore incentivised to not sell you horseshit because once you know the truth, you won't accept the job offer and they don't have a fee to earn.
There is little incentive to undercut the true salary, as they are shortchanging their own fee, and there is little incentive to over estimate the true salary because they risk wasting everyone's time (most importantly the client) and have to explain the embarrassing truth to their client when the candidate pulled out of the process because the comp was too low. The first question the client will ask is "Too low? Didn't you tell them the guide?"
