Do you guys use all your PTO?
First year analyst 6+ months into the job. Have only used one day of PTO thus far. Thinking I should start using it more. Do you guys use all of your PTO / is using all of it not looked upon favorably? If I use one PTO day a month, is that acceptable? I like to take short weekend trips.
You’ll get into the cadence of your firm as you see how people take time off. But 100% take all your time. You deserve it and it’s yours. It is part of your compensation package. My old firm allowed us to roll 5 days forward per year, so I would use all but 5. I can’t do that anymore, so I use each and every day. While some people are fine taking no days off or minimal days off, some people are not. Figure out what works for you. But know this - no one is watching and saying to themselves - “wow, that new analyst isn’t using his days off, let’s pay him more.” That wont happen. Use your days. All of them.
Really firm dependent. You’ll have to feel it out within your first 12 months and by what your manager tells you.
Generally, if you are at a legitimate shop excluding LifeCos, then no. My firm offers lip service about how you should take your PTO. But leadership leads by example. They hardly every take time off and it trickles down to the bottom.
Sounds like a crappy place to work.
Work to live… don’t live to work
"Your job is only legitimate if you're not allowed to travel"
Sick perspective on life
It’s not my view and it’s a bit of an exaggeration…people take time off. It’s just minimal and likely to be plugged in frequently when doing so.
Could u elaborate on the LifeCo comment?
I work at a large Lifeco, and you can take your pto essentially whenever you want. Most people(especially the more senior people) are still responding to emails daily. But as a junior when people got my out of office email, they all responded "nevermind enjoy the time off"
So, as others have noted, every firm has a different culture/vibe on "time off", including what actually counts or not. Like if you leave early for a doctors appointment or kids ball game, does that count? Or no because you work plenty of hours otherwise to make for it and you totally had your phone out responding to emails most of the time.
In today's broader corporate culture, it is totally expected to use all PTO (sans that which could be banked for future years), it's a benefit, and really you are volunteering time to the firm otherwise. Of course the "hardo" finbro culture of wall street that many real estate firms follow, may not buy in to this equally. Although I feel like people joining calls from "sunny tropical islands" is now standard fare (maybe a modern humble brag?? Alas, I did this a few weeks ago while in a warm climate locale and NE hit with bitter cold). This is what makes the whole "PTO" concept so fucked today, you pretty much always have your work phone with you, and probably travel with your work laptop. So.... people work on their time off all the time (I'm very guilty of this). And I do totally think there is a difference from being off and unplugged and off but still available (again firm by firm and even team by team on this).
My current firm is 100% use all your time, in fact, if you told people you allowed use or lose time to expire you would looked down on and mngt would chastise you if you did so publicly. I think this is a lot more common today than it was 10 years ago, some even use the motto "work hard, play hard" (fancy way of saying since you kill yourself during the regular week you desire to party hard and blow your money when off).
So, OP... my advice.... USE all your time that could expire (if you are on the fence, you can max out what if any is bankable into next year), it is yours and a benefit. I mean one day a month??? Like seriously, who beyond your manager who may have to approve or at least be told would have any idea?? You should do something like that, plus at least one legit week off a year (a lot of people mix/combine with holiday weeks if PTO time is short). If your firm has an issue with this from a cultural point of view, then I'd say its a shitty/toxic environment (there are many of these in CRE, and some pay well more as result, that's a deeper personal thing to consider IMHO).
Given 30 days a year with the ability to roll 5. I used all prorated days (I think like 14) when I first joined and I've only been here 5 months. We were highly encouraged to use our vacation days, and my manager approved my stuff within minutes of me requesting on our portal, haha. At a smaller prop firm/MM but really appreciate the WLB/Culture here. In other situations I'd say feel it out but if they're literally telling you to take vacation or your team is saying take a break, then take a break.
EDIT: Was just responding to top discussions on WSO didn't realize it was specifically for RE. My experience most likely will be different.
I used all days, and then some.
Been here a year and a half and used 0 so far
That’s fucking stupid
It is, but it rolls over and gets paid out when I leave. So not too worried about it
I've always made sure to take PTO, it's yours to use and you should use it -you should be keeping yourself sane and allowing yourself some time away from the desk and emails especially.
Nowadays I have a consultancy so I don't have to submit PTO requests, but I will still take circa 25 days throughout the year and let clients/LPs know ahead of time. I find it lets me chill out, go on trips, do home improvements etc.
But dont ever think you shouldn't take it or what superiors will think of you for taking it, what you should do is with good notice let them know when you intend to take off and try to plan it accordingly (i.e. not taking a week off when you're in the middle of a deal, though I realise it's sometimes difficult to balance that).
I end up using more PTO days than I'm technically allotted but also respond to emails while out of office, reasonable tradeoff imo. Really depends on the vibe of where you work.
I luckily do not work somewhere that counts my days off like an adult babysitter.
I take about a month off, spread throughout the year, every year. 1-2 week long vacations, week to a week and a half over the holidays, and a couple of long weekends.
Working somewhere where someone checked on my PTO would weird me out. Working somewhere where someone checked on my PTO and then I didn't even use it sounds idiotic.
Dude, in my office we are even supposed to take PTO to take like an hour or two for a doctor or dentist appointment. I could not in any way take more than my allotted PTO days. You’re living the dream: actually being treated like an adult, who knew?
I've never even bothered checking my entire career I just take days whenever I need to. Pretty sure I've always taken more than I'm technically allotted lol.
Yes take it all lol why is this a question
Believe I get off about 4 weeks total and I use all of it. Probably could get away with using more than my allocation. My MDs don’t use their PTO but they encourage everyone else to. I never understood hardos who boast about never using PTO. You’re missing the point. You get in this cushy career to be able to take advantage of stuff like PTO and the money we make.
How did you get that much!? I have 5 PTO and 5 sick
I get 3 weeks plus some "summer days". I use them all. Corporate America owns enough of my life. I am going to use all of the PTO that I get within the confines of this Faustian bargain.
To those who wear their lack of PTO use as a badge of honor.....f*** that shit, man.
