Why would hospitality school be remotely useful? Real estate maybe?
My response is not really helpful for the online component of OP’s question, but I used to think the exact same thing when I first entered the industry about who would major in hospitality to get into real estate. That said, I’ve met quite a few people over the years in senior positions at large RE investment shops which majored in hospitality at Cornell. I’d say that hotels (and maybe senior housing) are the two asset classes in which it’s more imperative to have an understanding of the business operations than other asset classes (revpar, adr, etc.)
While most people who major in hospitality stay in hospitality a lot are in real estate in general. Especially from Cornell. You will then in IB, REPE, etc.
It’s the best hospitality school, but many who go don’t go for that, rather real estate since they’re one of the only schools that have real estate as a concentration/major. Majority end up going into real estate investment and development.
I personally only know one person who did hotel management at Cornell (was not remote). He wound up getting a wealth management position and has done pretty well for himself. This is probably not too useful, but figured I'd share.
eCornell is a waste of money.
Thanks - appreciate it. Any further thoughts you can share?
It’s a for profit certificate program that is under staffed and unqualified. I worked as a “TA” years ago in a different vertical
I don’t know much about the online courses, but my brother goes there for real estate (in person) and loves it. I would like to say online is similar, but being on campus definitely offers greater networking and opportunity. He’s met many people within the school who are very like mind since concentrate in RE but because it’s hospitality, you’re able to make connections with others outside your field that you can potentially work with as well. I think it is the best place for anyone interested in CRE since most go directly into investment and development. He was extremely hesitant since it was hospitality, but it up being the best thing he could’ve done. Him and his friends bought a house freshman year and flipped it for low income housing. In my mind, it is rare to find people who are even interested in the industry at that age, nevertheless have the guts to buy a house and flip it. That is just one example of the opportunities the school can offer.
Thanks! Mind if I PM you with further questions? +SB
