Handling Anxiety in Corporate

Anybody have any anecdotal or actionable methods they use to help deal with stress/anxiety from corporate? Seems like no matter what I do or tell myself, anxiety mounts and the pressure of work demands stack up. Would appreciate any responses.

I’ve struggled with this. Some things I’ve realized that helps:

  1. It’s just apartments (I work in multifamily but replace with your asset class)
  1. Once you mess something up bad for the first time, you realize the fear of messing up is often worse than the actual consequences. If you miss on a calc or assumption, people will get mad, it will be a sucky day…but then everyone brainstorms how to fix the mistake and we all just move on. People are usually too focused on not screwing up themselves to be hyper fixated on your mistakes.
  1. At my first job, my Big Boss was the owner of the development shop. Not sure why this came up, but he told me something along the lines of “Any mistake you can possibly make, I promise you I have made 100 times.” Mistakes are part of the job. Own them, sound the alarm to your superiors if appropriate - you’ll be surprised how many things can be fixed if you just communicate early.
  1. Finally, your worth and identity are not derived from your work and what your coworkers/boss thinks of you. Sorry to get kind of randomly spiritual on ya, but I believe there’s a God who made you and loves you unconditionally, and there’s nothing you need to do to prove yourself to anyone. If you live every day with the freedom of knowing that your Dad is the King of the Universe, and you have His eternal approval…it’s hard to get too worked up over some minor work BS that doesn’t matter at all in the grand scheme of things.

For me a couple of things helped:

  • Separate your worth as a person away from the work you do. We have become so accustomed to having our academic and work achievements represent us, but that can be a double edged sword
  • Rescale how you see yourself. Are these mistakes something you will remember a month from now? A year from now? A decade from now? Ultimately each individual stressor on your mind will not be significant in the course of time
  • Release your stress. I'm a big believer in the fact that stress creates pent up energy inside us, and we need to find ways to let it out. Find what works for you. Maybe it's exercise, maybe its a creative activity, maybe its venting and speaking out loud what gives your anxiety
  • Address the issue. Is there anyway you can resolve the issue that is causing your stress? For me its confronting its head on and excessively planning for a project or deal that I'm staffed on. By exploring and creating contingencies for many things that could go wrong, I reassure myself with a formulated plan
  • Have faith in yourself. At the end of the day we can only control how we react to things in life, and know that you have brought yourself this far. Trust that you can handle whatever comes your way
