How do you know when it's time for a change of scenery?

Hello Monkies!

Quickly approaching my 2 year anniversary at my small emerging REPE shop. While those in the IB fields have a set career trajectory that usually sees them leaving for PE after their 2 year stint, us folks in the RE industry have a lot more options/experiences to choose from.

While the thought of sticking it out at my emerging fund sounds appealing (there have been promises of making partner (one day)) the city I live in is my hometown and I really think a change of scenery to a big city like DC or NY sounds appealing. I do enjoy REPE and acquisitions but if the ultimate goal is to be a MD or a partner in a Fund one day, I think it is essential that your real estate background has institutional names on the resume.

I am curious to hear other people's thoughts and stories regarding changing their jobs.

When did you decide to leave? What prompted you to make a change?

Not a fan of your post as proverbs are so contextual...which one should he apply?

Could be true that... When you are through changing, you are through. ~ Bruce Barton

At the same time... Those who expect moments of change to be comfortable and free of conflict have not learned their history. ~Joan Wallach Scott

And yet... All change is not growth, as all movement is not forward. ~Ellen Glasgow

In the end, I'd vote for... Continuity gives us roots; change gives us branches, letting us stretch and grow and reach new heights. ~Pauline R. Kezer

Edit: My answer is that only OP will know! Best of luck in your decision.

I left my previous job/city almost a year ago. Looking back, I wish I would have continued to recruit/interview or even just stay put. In my opinion, it's not worth changing things up...unless you get a job with your dream company, you know EXACTLY what you want, or you're absolutely miserable. That's what I gained out of my move. But that's me. Good luck with your decision @REPE8"
