How Long To Work To Receive Full Bonus?
How long do you have to work somewhere to receive a full bonus? Is it the full 12 months or will companies normally throw you a bone if you are a new hire and only been there for ~10 months out of the year? At my current company, I got a pro rated bonus because I started in July when bonuses pay out in February.
It's prorated for mid year hires. However, if you perform well, you could potentially be paid the full amount at year end from what I've seen and experienced. Otherwise a full bonus commensurate with year-end review (December/January).
Pro rated bonus means you will get it allocated for the months you are there. This also applies if your bonus changes midway through the year, i.e., you will get half of your old bonus and half of your new one.
Proration is very very standard, and should be made clear in the offer letter. Some have rules like, 6+ months = full bonus, or less than 3 months means no bonus. But overall, I’d say direct % proration is the most common (and frankly fair) way to do it.
I hired an analyst late in the year once, and negotiated to have a fixed payout at bonus time (we were slow to get the role approved and start date approved), so like all things…. They are negotiable! But, since I was essentially the “hiring mngr” for the role, I had to ask the unit head and HR to approve it (which they did very easily as it was the fair/right thing to do), had I not done so, this person would have basically gotten nothing.
