Interviewing for job I’m lukewarm on
Looking for some advice. Currently underwriting at a well-known firm. Pretty burnt out in underwriting and want to pivot to a more originations oriented position. I’m not really the UW type.
Applied for a job on a team I work closely with externally. Great group. It would be slightly higher pay and hybrid, which I do value having a 1hr commute each way.
However, it would be doing exactly what I’m doing now. I’m not excited about the job function and worry that a lateral move here would worsen my pigeon hole.
I applied and messaged a little hastily and now I’m kind of regretting it because I do value the relationship with this team.
Any tips on how to handle? Should I rescind my app (if so, with what explanation)? Should I go with the interview and explain I don’t want to stay in this vertical long term? Or should I just see if I can land the higher pay/better flexibility and figure out how to pivot from there?
Feel a little embarrassed that I let my restlessness get ahead of me and got these people’s attention when I donMt even know that I want the gig.
Are you at a bank because most of the smaller shops don’t differentiate between underwriting and originations?
Yes that’s correct. And would prefer to go to one of those shops for that reason.
Underwriting is fine and I don’t want to drop it entirely but 100% UW is starting to drive me crazy, mostly because of proximity to back-office box checking.
I know every job will have its things but I’m definitely not a career UW.
In the exact same boat as you. Working at WF/JPM doing balance sheet lending and I'm ready to blow my brains out each day. Definitely trying to pivot back to a hybrid origination/underwriting role but trying to make sure I pull the trigger when necessary.
This isn't helpful I'm sure, just wanted to lyk you're not alone in this search.
When do you think is the time to pull the trigger?
Honestly whenever you feel the timing is right and the role (and pay) fits what you are targeting.
Personally, I am trying to make it to 2 years at my bank, which will be in February. So slow playing some of the networking and outreach now to hopefully pay dividends come early next year.
Is the new company also a bank?
I would at least take the first interview so you can get a firmer feel for the job, but if it isn’t what you want, bow out of the process then.
Yes, looking at jumping to a bank seller/servicer underwriting agency business.
Really like the firm and would love to work there honestly — just not underwriting agency deals. (At least not for long)
Thinking it makes more sense to move to production at the agency for a bit.
