Job hunting timeline

Hello - Wanted to see what folks think is a 'usual' time-line for CRE recruiting?

I have 5+ years of experience in a CRE role at a bank and have just started looking for roles towards the of Jan/Early Feb. I've had a couple of superdays so far but no luck in landing an offer.

How 'long' do you usually see folks out in the job market before they land something? I've personally seen folks land the first job they interview for, but a lot of the time its due to having a strong connection at the firm. Eventhough its barely been over 2 months for me being in the market, I've started to become a little frustrated (thought i had good experience and a good story but guess thats not enough) and want to leave my current role/firm before the market turns (for the worse).

Thanks

When you already have a job, it is not too bad. Ideally you can search from a position of strength with no time pressure, that will allow you to find a good fit. Fit is important. I was looking casually last year and it took 6 to 8 months before something really caught my attention. I have been interviewing again for the last 2 months because I am moving to an awesome place, it is a similar process, I found one place i wanted to wait for an open position at, and when I finally interviewed with them, they didnt like me, but it is all good cuz they are working weekends and 12 hour days. two other places I am interviewing at are a slower process. All these firms have people I know working at them, it is a pretty focused search. You dont have to respond but, do you have a focused geography, or a focused field in CRE you are looking for? Yes to both of those questions makes things easier. If the universe is larger for you, it takes a little more work to sell the company on why you.

Thanks for your replies - helpful stuff.

Primarily looking for roles on the debt side - It seems like there were a ton of roles last year but there aren't that many this year, or at least not yet at least. Has anyone else noticed that as well?

I've also found the whole 'recruiting' process to be pretty random frankly, but I guess it is what it is!

Underwriting/Origination - thats what I do currently but at a bank where I also look at/do CMBS and very select balance sheet deals.. Ideally I'd like to go a small/nimble shop that has the flexibility to do all sorts of deals (as well as buy distressed/sub-performing notes) and where I could be involved in a lot more aspects of the business than just UW/Originations. Unfortunately haven't really been seeing roles like that at all lately...

Getting into the industry from an unrerlated industry took me ~1 year, and transitioning to my current role took about the same, but like REPESAILOR2020, I took a much more targeted approach. I understand getting frustrated, but unless there is an issue with your current job, you want to take your time and make sure you are getting yourself into a good situation.
