Jobs at Sr. MD level

I'm a long time monkey on WSO, using a throwaway account. I'm engaged to a private equity MD who is finding it a little tight at the top (too many people in their jobs and not enough opportunity for upward mobility). He is interested in moving on (and up), but doesn't know how, so I'm helping him. He's never job hunted before; has always been recruited. I'd be forever grateful is someone who knows could tell me how a person at the MD level in one of the largest PERE firms in the world gets to that next level (or lateral) in another PE firm. The highest I see advertised are VP positions, no MD or Sr. MD. Is it all networking? Recruiters? Does if even happen? Any help would be greatly appreciated!!

As another poster said, these jobs are 100% through recruiters. They will not be published on the company site or some external job board. Many firms want to keep these job posting quiet because 1) the applications you normally get online aren’t good and 2) there are usually internal politics they are trying to avoid. For senior roles these are normally jobs you “go and convince the right person” vs “someone applies”, so the recruiters do that job.
