KKR Analyst - Portfolio Management?

Recently talked to a guy in this group, and wanted to get this forums thoughts on this.

I come from an energy IB background and having a hard time getting myself to take that leap of faith, cutting pay, and switching to real estate.

Is portfolio management a good role? What are future prospects comp? Thanks!

If you're coming from IB, portfolio management is not going to be what you want. You'd want acquisitions, development, or investment associate or analyst etc. It is not like a HF where a portfolio manager is the real deal. Portfolio management, also sometimes called asset management, is a reporting role. It is about helping key stakeholders understand what is going on with the asset.

PM is not AM my guy and I think you have an incomplete understanding of what PM, or even AM entails. There are more than just reporting going on in these functions and they all vary firm to firm. There are other threads discussing what these jobs actually are. Not my intent to start an internet debate. Just wanted to clarify that a PMer does just reporting...

I agree that a "PMer does just reporting." Though in all seriousness, we both know that AM/PM at a place like KKR will entail some amount of reporting and will likely be a turn off to OP, who is coming from IB. As OP said "Just interviewed and it seemed like a data analyst role for fund performance and just reporting to the LPs. Not sure how nice that sounds but could be wrong." That is pretty much what I said it would be...
