Leave after 6 mo’s for better opp??

Long story short, was with this firm (high volume multi developer / top NMHC charts) for several years, was promoted, left for greener pastures (more interesting projects and higher comp). Turned out not so green. Broken promises. Came back to original firm. Have been back for several months. Great, potentially life changing, opportunity has come along. How bad is it to now leave AGAIN?? Obvious goal would be that new situation would be a FOREVER move. Any thoughts?

Obviously assuming I wouldn’t be able to come back to current firm after leaving second time.

Biggest fear = if opportunity doesn’t pan out as expected, can’t rely on coming back to current firm after leaving for second time.

Biggest pro = new role focused on opening brand new market with very well capitalized multi firm, lots of upside, could change my life, but would likely definitely burn bridges with current firm. No going back.

Open to all thoughts- bad move? Good move? Shitty move?

If you truly believe this opportunity is life-changing then you'd be dumb not to take it—at the end of the day, you have to prioritize what's best for you and yours.

That said, since you just went through a similar situation you should really slow down and scrutinize this one a bit more. Do some deeper due diligence on the team, culture, and opportunity.

If its so good where you are at why are you leaving? I know people at very well known firms that are lean and they get the same promises of life changing money - who knows if they will ever see anything like it and how much can you expect unless you're the top 5 guy. Life changing is $10mm+ and very few people besides the founders or their families see consistent money like that. I've seen it at many shops, someone has been there 20 years at very established NYC firms that are private making a few hundred k and worth max $10-15mm (to 5 guys there) while two principals are billionaires. I wouldn't rely on them saying you'll make x if you build this out.
