Looking to enter real estate investment

I am a rising junior at a well known private school in New England. I am a finance major looking to get into a real estate investment or development firm. Grades aren’t the top of the class, but I am a D1 athlete. I’m wondering if IB is the only route or if there’s a way to go directly into a RE investment firm. My thought was to attempt to get an internships with a firm for next summer through direct contact as I haven’t seen them advertised as IB roles have been so far. Any advice or guidance would be appreciated!

Definitely possible to go directly into real estate. If you’re a student-athlete, I’m sure your school has some sort of alumni network put together for students to see. If not, I would just go on Linkedln and try to search former alumni and/or student-athletes. I only say this because folks are much more likely to take your message/email/call if you have something in common with them.

I would start by just asking to hear more about what they do, how they got to where they are, etc. Talk to as many different people as you can - acquisition, asset management, originations, banking, lawyers, brokers, appraisers, whatever. I think this is a great way to a) start building a network b) learn more about to industry c) see what interests you and d) finally, see if there are potential internship opportunities available once you’ve established a relationship.

Other than that, if you are at a well-known school, I’m sure you will see RE internships advertised on your student job portal in a few months for junior summer. I would suggest listing any real estate clubs or courses you have taken on your resume because it is important to show a demonstrated interest in real estate from the get go. Best of luck!

Tons of ways to get into real estate investment straight out of school. If you're interested in getting into real estate, I would do a real estate focused internship but not be hugely focused on what it is. Guys I worked with had internships at investment shops, developers, brokerage, you name it. Didn't really end up mattering.
