Master's in Real Estate Programs around the World
Various Master's programs in Real Estate in the US are widely known, but there is little to no information on such courses outside the country. I am looking to study Real Estate Development, and was fixated on America for quite some time, but now I wish to explore other options.
Any input would be valuable.
I was looking at IE in Madrid for their Masters in Real Estate Development. Whole program is in English and only takes 10 months. Feedback I've gotten from this forum and from others is it may be tough to pitch this degree to American companies. I know someone who did another masters at IE and had a tough time getting jobs when she came back to NYC. I am still very much interested in an international masters just for the experience alone.
I am currently in Spain for an MRED. I made this decision because:1) I want to work in Spain / Europe / LatAM countries2) This would help build a network in those countries/Europe.3) European brand recognition4) Fluent in Spanish
Please at least go to school in the country that you want to work in.
Real estate tends to be fairly "local", so what country/region you do a MSRE/D program (especially for development) will be where you are best suited for getting hired. My general advice is to pick the city/region you most want to work and find the program that best works for you (if you are one who can move for school/work).
If you are looking to have broad global options after graduation, hands down the major US programs will be your best bet. NYU/Columbia/MIT/Cornell/Georgetown plus all the big MBA programs with truly strong real estate concentrations. Those schools get lots of int'l students and have alumni bases globally. I don't think anything really compares.
My first preference would always be the US, by a long shot, but I’m an international student, and the current visa situation is making me consider other options.
Yeah, that is a legit issue, not sure how all that will sort itself. So, then I'll ask a broad question, what continent or country are you most interesting in working? May get better suggestions if you throw that out.
I’ve been trying to look at alternatives but so far nothing seems as appealing. Canada only has York that offers a degree in Real Estate, Australia has a couple universities with courses in Property Management, but otherwise nothing matches the US.
The MPhil in Real Estate Finance from Cambridge is a very respected degree in the UK. Placements range from REIB to REPE at top shops

DO NOT DO IT! waste of money until its really a respectful brand even so. I would advise MBA at that point

Someone mentioned it above, but Cambridge's RE MPhil is indeed a good option. Other well-known/decent European schools that offer similar courses are LSE, CASS, Manchester and ESCP. The truth is that few top-tier schools offer such a specialized course and the others you will see around will be the likes of Aberdeen, Reading, Herriot-Watt. None of these are great brand names and for the most competitive roles the "university name > course relevance" rule applies. A better option (which I have seen friends and past course-mates do) is to get into a top-tier MFin and pick as many RE courses as you can (both at your home school and abroad if the course offers an exchange semester) as well as combining that with RE-relevant internships. Clearly, if you can get into relevant courses at brand names like Cambridge and LSE then you're pretty much set. If this fails, going for an RE-specific course at a 2nd or 3rd tier name school may do more harm than good.
