Model Help

I built my firms model from scratch. It’s gotten overly detailed over time.

It’s a pretty solid and robust model overall but my biggest issue is it takes FOREVER to open. I can’t figure out what is happening to make it take this long.

It saves quickly, it works well when you’re in it, it just takes 2-4 minutes to open. I’ve tried removing all external links and pictures. I’ve reduced sensitivities. I’ve cleared all circular references. Name manager won’t open for some reason. WHY IS THIS HAPPENING. Please help.

Open -> save a version under a new name in a separate folder -> delete a page -> save -> check if file size went way down -> repeat this until you find a problem page.

Usually it's a page that has ghost data on one of the last rows or columns in excel, by doing the above you can isolate the problem page. After you identify the problem page, ctrl+x the cells with data onto a new sheet and delete the old sheet. If it's not that, check the name manager for outside links. If it's not that, if you have images in the excel (including shapes), click one on each page, click selection pane, you might see thousands of images that duplicate when you save or C&P stuff.

If none of that works I'd need to take a look at it.

Make a new model and challenge yourself to make it three pages

1. Summary / Returns

2. Inputs

3. Waterfall & Cash Flow

I actually ran into the same problem a couple of months ago and was able to reduce the size after searching for quite a bit of time as sometimes it can be quite specific. Happy to take a look - DM me.

May sound like a dumb suggestion, but I'd double-check for formatting that makes the file large (are you filling cells w/ white vs. removing gridlines from the menu or have lots of conditional formatting) and see if there are any massive ranges in formulas that can be reduced/shortened. You can also set the data tables in the sensitivity analysis to not update automatically. Good luck.
