Moving from Associate to Analyst?
I currently work on the agency side at the associate level with about 4 years of experience. I want to move to a debt fund/RE credit investment role. I haven't seen a ton of openings at the associate level, but have seen some analyst roles. Would it ever make sense to apply/explore analyst roles at shops like that? Is it possible I could sustain my current comp or get a bump if the firm was good enough? Is it worth asking if they'd maybe consider me for something more akin to an associate role if I got in the process?
Probably! My company just hired somebody as an associate while the job posting said “analyst” since they had the experience and we really wanted them. I’ve also seen people take an analyst role as a step down in title but step up in brand name, with the guarantee that if they perform they will be promoted by year end.
At the same time there’s some roles we’re looking for junior analysts to do more grunt work so we wouldn’t consider someone more senior. But never hurts to ask!
