Moving to Boston
Moving to Boston and wanted to hear any recommendations on where to live. Studio/1B's rents are crazy. Primarily looking at Back Bay and South End.
Also, don't know too many people so feel free to reach out if you want to grab beers!
Back Bay is nice, but the places will be older and smaller, South End is hit or miss, big homeless issue off Mass Ave and the homeless flock into parts of the South End as you head South and West away from the Prudential. We have a family friend in a 6 mil brownstone constantly have people crap in their downstairs entrance.
There are more areas like Sommerville and Brookline, outside the city still expensive but are away from the tourist traps of downtown. Depends on your age and what you want your neighborhood to be like.
Brookline is “outside the city”, but surrounded by the city on three sides. The southwest part, by The County Club, is suburban mansions, but the eastern part by BU and Longwood is dense apartments. It’s very close to Fenway and have 3 Green Lines running though it. It’s popular with med students and residents. Coolidge Corner and Brookline Village have some nice restaurants and bars, but geared towards an older crowd. It’s quiet, but walkable to Fenway area. It’s a good option.
My favorite place I lived was Washington Sq in Brookline. Other places I lived are Brookline Village, Newton Highlands, E St, Savin Hill, Porter Sq, The old Sutherland T stop and Lower Allston near the Police station, so if you are looking in those areas I know them pretty well, aside from The Fens off Park Dr, which has all been condo converted.
I say stay away from Southie or Seaport.
Maybe try beacon hill, which is a nice area closer to downtown but it's very quiet, mostly older people. South end is nice, younger crowd but you do have some of the problems mentioned above. If you want cheaper but still nice you may have to trade a few extra minutes on the train by going to Charlestown or Jamaica Plains. I've seen some really nice 1BR 750+ sq ft for under 2500 in JP.
Try near Savin Hill area in Dorchester, specifically over the bridge. Southie is another go-to neighborhood although expensive and mainly 2-3 beds. Cambridge or Somerville would work as well.
I was about to comment Savin Hill, huge gentrification and not as expensive as Hyde Park or JP. Not like it was my first time at suffolk when it was nicknamed Stabbyhill.
Yeah it’s came a long way since Stabbin Hill days. Lots of strollers and dogs now. Plus parking is easy to find if needed.
