Office Politics
Hope everyone is well.
Despite being somewhat savvy on the office politics front, I'm finding myself in the middle of bizarre situation (debt & equity brokerage). Long story short, two very senior people (lets call them person A1 and person A2) are butting heads on who gets to keep a prized client relationship and it looks like i am going to get thrown under the bus somehow - even though I'm just a sizer/underwriter.
I was originally in person A1's team for a few months and (only) covered the said client as a sizer/underwriter. However, i was recently transferred over to person A2's team, and person A2 was under the impression that along with me being transferred, the client relationship gets transferred as well (which doesn't make any sense), but that's what he told me and operated under that assumption. Note that both person A1 and A2 are the most senior ppl in the firm and have been with the company for 10+ years.
The company just got mandated on a new deal by the client and it went under person A1's book. Upon learning this, person A2, my new boss, totally reamed me out a few days ago and told me the reason for having me on the team and that implied that i should not be in his team/have a different job - again i dont know how this makes any sense since I am just an associate level person, not an MD and i have no personal relationship with the client or ability to influence who to work with...
Curious if anyone has been in a somewhat smilier situation at a brokerage, lender, equity shop etc and perhaps what a reasonable way to manage this unusual situation would be? Given this crappy job market, the last thing I want to do is be out on my butt unemployed.
You will need to do this delicately, but you need to find a way to tell A2 that is problem is with A1, not you and to take it up with A1. You're not going to solve this conflict and it's not going to do you any favors to be in the middle of it.
Agreed - its unfortunate that this, almost unbelievable, situation is arising in this market environment.
I havent heard anything further on this front, part of me thinks this or next friday is my last day, but I am also super busy as work (and we need bodies) so not sure if this outburst by A2 was more out of him having a bad day and taking it out on me, rather than being totally delusional.
