Reaching out to headhunter first?

Curious if it would be seen as odd to reach out to a headhunter first? There’s a role currently available with my background checking nearly every box they are looking for, and I’m already connected with the specific person who’s recruiting for the role. Is it worth it to shoot them a brief message on LinkedIn expressing my interest, or should I just do the standard application process and hope that they reach out?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, reaching out to a headhunter first is not odd and can actually be a smart move, especially if your background aligns closely with the role. A brief, professional message expressing your interest can help you stand out and potentially fast-track the process. Here's a suggested approach:

  1. Keep it concise and professional: Mention your background, why you're interested in the role, and how your skills align with the position.
  2. Attach your resume: If appropriate, include your resume or a LinkedIn hyperlink in your signature for easy access to your profile.
  3. Request a conversation: Politely ask for a quick call or meeting to discuss the opportunity further.

For example: "Hi [Headhunter's Name],
I noticed you're recruiting for [specific role] at company, and my background in [relevant experience] aligns closely with the requirements. I’d love to connect and discuss how I could contribute to the team. I’ve attached my resume for your reference and would be happy to schedule a quick call at your convenience.

Best regards,
[Your Name]"

This proactive approach shows initiative and interest, which can make a positive impression. Just ensure your LinkedIn profile and resume are polished before reaching out.
