Real estate internships for non-targets

Hello,

I am a rising junior from a non-target top 50 school, and had a few questions about searching for internships within real estate. Ideally, I would like to intern for a REIT or a REPE firm on the acquisitions side, but I know I'm not in a great position to be picky from a non-target (especially in this job market). There is little OCR for Real Estate at my school.

I have a 3.6 and solid ECs (D3 Varsity Sport, Fraternity chair positions, Student Government, Business Honor Society at my school). I also have my RE license in New York, although I doubt that adds much value. The only RE experience I have consists of working for my parents at their residential brokerage firm (basically answering phone calls from clients, valuing properies using comparables, and showing properties to prospective buyers).

I know that real estate is a huge industry, and I have no idea how i should proceed with this internship search for next summer. Any help would be great!

If there's little OCR for real estate, then you have to pound the pavement and meet as many people as possible. Everyone always talks about networking but in real estate it's even more crucial. While ideally anyone would love to work for say, a Blackstone RE, your best bet might be to find some smaller owner/operators who usually partner up with the larger institutions. While these jobs might not be the big name, high finance type job, you're more likely to get an in by just meeting people through informational interviews.

I'm not in NY so I'm not sure how all of this works over there, but it seems to hold true in other areas.

I appreciate the advice, I'm going to start making a list of firms now and contact them in the fall. One thing though....my school offers no classes that are RE-related (I'm a business and management major with a finance concentration and an econ minor). Would having no RE coursework be a major impediment to my chances of being hired? Thanks!
