What kind of firms do real estate private credit?
Is it usually family offices or are there larger institutional players?
Any examples of family offices that do this?

Of course its a viable alternative to REPE. You just need to ask yourself if you're interested in being a lender or if you're interested in working closely with the assets.
There are tons of large institutional players - Blackstone has a huge debt fund that IIRC from the article I read this morning is looking to deploy $9B. Brookfield does massive lending, etc. etc.
As a debt broker, their seems to be a large amount of variety in this space from institutional investors to family offices to individuals. The analysis is completely different at all these types of lenders. So if you can be picky. I highly recommend debt brokering if you are interested in CRE lending as you get exposed to every type of lender.
