IREI ranks by total AUM and could be considered more comprehensive https://irei.com/wp-content/uploads/2019/08/2019_PFR_IREI-REPORT-US.pdf

That is pretty much the universe, you will realize, the names are the same on both lists, i.e. their is no understood difference in firm type. People conflate private equity firms doing deals in the real estate industry (i.e. Blackstone buying Equity Office Properties for the largest LBO at the time in 2007) with the private real estate investment management business. This is really something made up by students and people on WSO. There are different investment strategies and fund/business models, some firms do a few or just one and others run the whole supermarket.
