Small company exit opps, looking for advice
I'm coming out of college working with a multifamily dev/acquisitions company with 5 guys, it's essentially 2 partners who run the show and then a few support guys - I think this is a great opportunity out of school to be involved with deals right away, but I find myself thinking about what I could do if things don't work out here and I get tired of dealing with the niche "vanilla" strategy they have
I see stories here of guys going from large REPE shops to small or large development shops to small but not many stories the other way around - if I wanted to make a move to a large REPE fund would this be possible coming from such a small, niche group? Would an MBA be advantageous at all if I tried to make this move?
On the other hand - there's the possibility that I really enjoy the small team atmosphere, are there small REPE groups that kill it and are relatively well known? I think this may be a more likely transition for me, but I don't here much about top groups like this with a smaller headcount
Any advice, experience, or info here would be really appreciated - I just sort of started second guessing myself and thinking about my future with all this time being cooped up during quarantine
My post MBA job was a very small, boutique RE, I-banking and advisory firm (like I think 5 people maybe including me), this was in a secondary city and I graduated from a non-target school.
I now work for a larger international developer in a fairly senior role based in NYC. My path between these two items was not standard, but worked well for me.
Big advice...... build a strong local/national reputation. How to do this you may ask??
Join one to three national organizations with big local chapters (ULI/NAIOP/NMHC/etc.)
Pick one to go 'all in' with, volunteer, get on boards, get noticed locally
Attend national conferences and volunteer at the national level.
Repeat with a second organization and you can be a rockstar. If you blog, speak or do other things that build a platform and reputation it can only help. This is not like a one year process, this is like a 10-15 year process. But start ASAP. Few actually do this well, so its an untapped opportunity.
