Thoughts on moving from MBB (post-MBA) to RE (REPE or development shop)?

Hey all,

First time poster here. As it says in the title, I am interested in moving from MBB to RE (REPE/development). Has anyone seen this done before with no prior RE experience? If so, any thoughts on how to go about the switch? Also, unsure whether I should target REPEs or development shops (or both) – goal is to gain exposure to full spectrum of work, with the hopes of one day starting my own venture.

For context: I am at an MBB in post-MBA role. Prior to b-school I worked in PE (niche/boutique shop) and in a finance role at one of the PE firm’s port cos. I am relatively young for having attended an MBA, with only ~2.5 years’ experience prior to the program (unsure if this is relevant). I have been in my current role here for ~7 months now, and while I know it’s still early, I really am not enjoying myself. The people are great, and I am a top performer, but the work is just not what I am passionate about.

I have thought about a career in RE before, but now I want to take the steps to make it happen. I spend a lot of my free time looking at properties in my market, trying to estimate build-out costs etc., and making financial models – and this is something I enjoy a lot. I think tying in my career with something that I am passionate about/that aligns to my end goals, would be a rewarding experience, both professionally and personally.

Sorry for the rant, just been doing some soul-searching these past few months.

TLDR: Unhappy with current role, really interested in RE and want to make the switch.
