Thoughts on SMU Cox MSRE for Breaking Into Development?

I’m considering applying to the SMU Cox MSRE and wanted to get some perspective from people working in CRE, particularly in Texas.

• Do developers or acquisitions teams actively recruit from the program, or are most placements networking-driven?
• How strong is the alumni network in Dallas (Trammell Crow, Hines, Vantrust, etc.)?
• For someone interested in eventually working in development, does the program meaningfully improve your chances of breaking in?

Would appreciate any honest perspectives from people who have worked with grads from the program or recruited from it.

Based on the most helpful WSO content, SMU Cox is highly regarded for its strong alumni network and connections in Texas, particularly in Dallas. Here are some insights:

  1. Recruitment and Networking: While there isn't explicit mention of developers or acquisitions teams actively recruiting directly from the SMU Cox MSRE program, the general sentiment across WSO threads emphasizes that real estate is a networking-driven industry. SMU Cox provides a robust platform for networking, especially in Dallas, which is home to major players like Trammell Crow, Hines, and others. The program's alumni network is noted to be strong and well-connected in the region.

  2. Alumni Network in Dallas: SMU Cox alumni are well-represented in the Dallas real estate scene. The program is known for fostering connections with local and regional developers, which can be a significant advantage for someone targeting firms like Trammell Crow, Hines, or Vantrust. Networking through alumni events and leveraging the program's connections can open doors to opportunities in development.

  3. Breaking into Development: The program can meaningfully improve your chances of breaking into development, provided you actively network and gain relevant experience during your time there. Real estate development roles are competitive, and having the MSRE credential, combined with internships or project experience, can make you a more attractive candidate.

In summary, SMU Cox MSRE is a solid choice for breaking into development, especially if you plan to stay in Texas. However, success will largely depend on your ability to leverage the program's network and gain practical experience.

I lived and worked in Dallas and didn't even know Cox had a real estate program. My old firm did interview SMU MBA students from time to time. I do hear a lot of the MBA students try to go the development route as well might want to explore the MBA option.

The SMU MBA specifically the professional has already got to be 50% real estate, maybe this is an attempt to separate them out.
