I am assuming they get paid only if their sourced candidate gets hired? But in that case, if the company was looking at two equally qualified candidates- one internally referred or a candidate that applied directly through the company's website versus a candidate brought by a recruiter, isnt the recruiter's candidate at a disadvantage? I was thinking the candidate will pay the recruiter a recruiting fee and the recruiter will go leverage their relationships with companies and try to get candidates a interview and that way companies will not care because it does not cost them anything.

RETS is OK - I've had hit or miss encounters with their people. Depends on the recruiter. Keep in mind that the majority of the best roles in this field are found by direct industry connections/networking. Very few of what I'd call the top tier jobs (at least in my market) are sourced through 3rd party HH'er. It's good to reach out to them to expand your search, but the buck shouldn't stop with them.

"Who am I? I'm the guy that does his job. You must be the other guy."
