Resume question. When applying to internships starting in the fall (e.g. off-cycles), is it ok to include in the resume an incoming summer analyst position? Is it seen as unethical/can backfire with the SA employer (as it doesn't show commitment)?

I was in the reverse situation. Was interviewing for an off-cycle internship. The director asked me whether I planned to apply for summer internships for the upcoming year. He said he'll get back to me as soon as possible so I can put the off-cycle internship on my CV for the applications.
Now, would he have behaved the same way in your situation? Maybe not. If your SA employer finds out your applying for other opportunities before they make the decision on return offers, it might affect your chances negatively. But I don't see how they would find out. Maybe give some more information. Are you an SA at GS in NY and applying for off-cycle at MS in NY or something less closely related?

Pretty closely related. BB SA in London who'd like to apply to off-cycles in other BBs/buy-side in London. But I do care about getting a return offer more than anything!
I see. So getting a return offer is your top priority but you also want to do an off-cycle internship and now you're trying to bring the two together? I did an internship at one of the largest AM firms in the world and then applied for S&T internships at BBs. All the S&T interviewers loved that because the AM was either a client or seen as a potential client. The director I mentioned in my previous post couldn't stop talking about how great their relationship with the AM is. I think we can assume that if the order of the internships is reversed it would still look positive or at least not too negative. In your situation I'm guessing that could be SA in M&A and then off-cycle in corporate strategy at a large company (or whatever the department is that identifies or oversees M&A deals on the corporate side).
The issue that arises in the head of your SA employer when you do an off-cycle at another BB in M&A or at a PE shop (competitor/exit) is clear. You don't seem committed, you might shop your return offer around, you're already planning your exit after 1-2 years as analyst etc. The latter concern will also arise when you do an internship in corp strat. But you can frame it as understanding the client perspective, becoming a better/more rounded banker.

That’s inaccurate. I go to a target in a major financial center (NYC/London). Plenty of people here intern off cycle after having signed their SA offer. There’s never been any problem.

in any case, you're there for a summer internship, not an off cycle, they shouldn't have any reason to be upset with you, they'll understand that you're maximising opportunities for yourself - and that is in the unlikely case that they even find out
