Genuine Question - Student Resume - Investment Project? Good or Bad? Read Description
Second year student at semi-target seeking for Winter 2025 in Canada. I don’t have professional working experience and most of my resume is from leadership experiences (i.e student organizations) and a case competition—not to mention, my GPA is not meeting the IB “standard threshold”. I was wondering if listing my Investment Account under the title “Investment Project Account” as being acceptable and naming the title as Equity Research–because in theory it was/is. I conducted a few Fibonacci retracement’s, established market entry and exit points, analyzed 10K’s, Q’s, monitored data with Excel and used functions etc. With that said, though it’s not at any expert level status, I take it quite seriously—and have been trying my best to scale it, which is a reason why my GPA isn’t as high as it should be. Furthermore, partaking in this has really given me purpose on why I am so passionate about a career in finance and capital markets. I have already applied to a number of jobs (give or take 35) but I want to know if moving forward, this would be a viable option? Additionally, may or may not be useful but I aspire to use ML to be able to help track and infer data on stock valuation/equity research. Not at the point yet where I am able to build an ML entity, but I’m trying!
Don’t do this. Don’t dress it up as more than it is, you won’t get past the first round.
Ah okay, I really do appreciate the feedback. Do you mind elaborating? Just for more context, for many postings I applied to, they are for entry level co-op intern postings (not IB, more like back office CM, WM etc.)—of which mostly consist of 1 interview—my peers who are in the current Fall 24’ rotation gave me some insight on it. Ultimately because my resume is so limited, I was hoping on using this just to demonstrate I have somewhat of an interest in finance, I’m not hoping to purely use this as the gateway into IB or the job and base all behavioural’s/personals on it. Primarily, my other experiences were not exactly finance but demonstrate other soft/transferable skills that would be applicable to the job. Once I do land a rotation then I would either omit it from the resume or keep it to a minimum just again to show more interest and give character–I guess? I would love more insight, genuinely–I’m just seeking for more guidance!
You can totally talk about stuff like this but it’s always really cringe and usually pretty transparent when students dress their experience up as more than it is. We know you’re in college—we’re not expecting too much. Write it how it is, don’t say you’re working in equity research when you’re not. Good luck!
