Junior applying for SA positions

I am hoping to secure an SA position in IBD or S&T this summer and I'm hoping I can get a few critiques of my resume. Outside of courses I have essentially no finance experience and I am wondering whether I will be able to overcome this problem. Any help is greatly appreciated, as I will need to finalize applications in the coming weeks. Thank you very much.

I'm not very experienced either (junior also, with one previous internship) but I'd like to think coming from Wharton with a 3.9 gpa, you're a lot better off than a lot of other people (aka myself haha)

  1. I don't like the format at all, but if Wharton told you to use that its ok...if not change it. I don't like that you specified every single thing (i.e. school address: X permanant address:Y). Most if not all could be combined into a header with your name

  1. For your work experience you right aligned your dates, but in your education you didn't

  2. Just put BS in Economics (Concentrations in Finance and Statistics), Minor in Statistics Expected May 2011

  3. Relevant coursework doesn't really need current, and rather than putting your courses in a table just put in a straight up list like Relevant Coursework: X, Y, Z, etc.

  4. Why do you have pre-college experience on your SA application? Just put the national Merit Scholarship under awards at the end.

  5. I honestly hate the way the lines start after Education like "Education_____________"

  6. Change Relevant Experience to Work and Leadership Experience if you want- its more common

  7. Quantify results and make bullets more results oriented

  8. Make tutoring sound better like did you tutor in "High level courses", did all your tutees get A's etc.

  9. Finance club, describe and highlight your experience- even if you are just a shareholder rather than an analyst. Describe the fund, if you voted on specific holding say like "Contributed to the fund beating the S&P 500 by X"

  10. Skills section, change the name, add interests (no downside to this unless you have like "high energy physics and phantom racing lol)

  11. Honestly "Experience in Word, Excel, and Powerpoint is useless- they expect this. Unless your certified, remove this.

  12. In contrast to the header, ass specific sections for the skills like Languages : Conversational Proficiency in Spanish Software and Computer Languages :C++, JMP etc.

Ignore the formatting issues if your career center says otherwise. I have a feeling that the Wharton career center knows more about this than me.

Yea, your formatting looks like a 3 year old did it... I hope that isn't what UPenn told you to do. If it is, I would recommend seeing if you can meet with the Wharton business specific career center (I think there is one) rather than the A&S school center. I like MMBinNC's comments. Good suggestions. I think the WSO Networking guide also has a sample resume in it you can look at for an alternative format, but not sure.

The fact that you have no experience hurts but you have a great GPA, great SATS and a great school on your resume will help you get interviews. Once you get the interview the resume doesn't matter. Be a likable person and study up on your interviews questions using some guides and you will be fine.

 

Content-wise, your bullet points don't do very much to sell you.

You are focused on PROCESS. But recruiters will scan your resume for RESULTS.

Education takes up half of your resume. Most junior resumes should be no more than a third of the page.

Have you participated in anything else since starting college? Even if you were only a member of the finance club, what did you do? You should have at least 2 bullets on that.

You should also have Personal Interests listed -- right now, your resume is all business and doesn't show much of a personality. In interviews, it will be harder to strike up an interesting conversation without having a more personal resume.
