26M, want to move from Tech Sales into Investment Banking/Consulting

Hello all,

I have been considering doing an MBA and have started preparing for the GMAT test.

I live in the UK and currently work in tech sales but want to move into investment banking or tier 1 consulting.

MBA Info

  • Why I want an MBA: Move from tech sales into front office investment banking or MBB consulting

  • Target Schools: The M7, T15 (in US) and London Business School (I live in London)

Work Experience:

  • 1 year of corporate law internships

  • 1 year of junior sales role at a software company

  • Promoted laterally when I moved to Gartner (will be 1 year soon)

  • Plan is to move to Google or AWS next year and work there for a year or 2

    • That gives me 4-5 years work exp

Extracurriculars:

  • Created a business whilst at university (generated a few $hundred pm, nothing huge)

  • Was part of the exec team in a few university societies

Education:

  • Top 5 university in the UK (either UCL or LSE) - studied History (achieved 67% 2.i - equivalent to a 3.7/4 GPA)

Nationality: British

Sex: Male

Age: 26 (will be applying to start in September 2023 when I would be 28)

GMAT: Haven't done it yet but I am aiming for a score of 720+

GPA: All my education has been in the UK so we don't have GPAs

Do I have a realistic shot at the following two things:

  1. Getting into a good school

  2. Moving into IB or consulting

Thanks

Tech sales is great but I have always wanted to be an investment banker.

Main reasons:

1) working with financial data and doing valuations and modelling

2) I am a strong interest in finance and the stock market

3) IB is a better career in terms of pay

4) working on high-profile transactions

Only type of banker you should be is a restructuring banker. Legend has it Rx bankers have pure liquid gold flowing through their veins - they truly are the epitome of humanity. I would rather be a janitor at PJT RSSG than be the President of the US.
