700 GMAT good enough for Top 10?
I recently took the GMAT for the first time and made a 700. Is this score high enough to be competitive in the admissions process for a Top 10 MBA program? I realize there's more to one's application than his/her gmat score, so I've included some more of my background below.
Undergrad: "Public Ivy" with a top ten business program, 3.7 GPA
Current employer: top five management consulting firm
assuming you're a white/indian/asian male you really should aim for a minimum 720 for top 10
Take it again. Worst case you don't perform as well, best case you improve your score. Agreed with above, shoot for at least 720 to be safe. If you're that well rounded then 700 might be good enough, but better to be safe than sorry.
IMO it's good enough for "top 10" but probably not for "top 5". Are you going to be happy with Yale/Tuck/Ross (thinking this may be where you went to undergrad so probably not :)) or do you really want H/S/W/B?
A higher GMAT on its own won't move you from Ross to HBS. But agree with the sentiment that the risk of trying again is low. If you don't crack 700, you're still in a decent spot.
I retook with a modest score (680-700) and ended up with a top 1%, I'm sure it had an impact on y admissions
Agreed - but if the question was "Will a 700 keep me out of Yale?" I'd say "no", but if it was "Will a 700 keep me out of HBS?" I'd say "maybe"
In my experience, admissions professionals are timid and susceptible to coercion.
Hope this helps!
If your cv is strong why not?! anyway consider the percentile sheet, 720 is another world than 700
If you got 700 first time you'll surely be able to get 720 if you do it again without too much extra work. You can definitely get in with 700 but probably best not to take the risk.
If you had got 700 on your 5th attempt I'd tell you to just keep it but since it's your 1st you might as well go again.
Exactly! Good advice
I got a 700 on my first attempt as well. Took it again three weeks later and scored 780. I didn't really change my study habits during that time - I think it just relaxed me more to know I already had a 700 to fall back on. I tell everyone to take it twice even if you're happy with your first score - it can't hurt.
