A 3.9 in Finance/Humanities major or a 3.7 in STEM Double major
I am wondering from an MBA application standpoint (To top programs like HSW). Which one is more impressive? A 3.9 in Finance/Humanities single major or a 3.7 in STEM (like Math and Computer Science) Double major (Assume same GMAT and similar leadership experiences). I feel like schools don't really put much emphasis on the rigorousness of your undergrad major or program because it's hard to evaluate how hard a program really is. Any thoughts?
Considering you're from a school which is at least decently regarded for STEM majors, the stem double major is definitely more impressive.
Average GPA of HBS is like 3.79. So 3.7 might be a bit low?
The fact that you're a stem major will be accounted for. You won't be at a disadvantage.
Lumping finance and humanities in the same bucket is a little rich. Most finance programs I know are pretty competitive, avoid grade inflation etc. Also some (most?) undergrad b-schools are harder to get into than the rest of the collegeprogram. So I’ll rank it 3.9 finance, then 3.7 STEM, then humanities.
But that’s assuming all equal. STEM kid probably has a more unique job and story which is most important.
Spot on. Finance isn’t a hard subject but most if not all top Finance programs engage in serious grade deflation, be it Wharton or Stern or Sloan...
Usually it's more impressive to get a 3.7 in STEM double major. But if you go to a very top undergrad business school like Wharton then it's debatable.
