Admissions to Top UK Masters: Does University Origin Matter?
I'm aiming for a top UK Master's (LSE,LBS) but am currently at a "no-name" French university, and I need to know if my undergraduate institution's prestige is a decisive factor for admission. I'm considering transferring to Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR), as its graduates place very well into these top Master's programs, and I want to assess if this strategic move is worth the very high cost of living in Rotterdam given my ultimate goal is a career in London. The core of my dilemma is whether the "brand name" of EUR is a necessary investment to unlock these top Master's opportunities, or if I can achieve the same result by excelling with top grades and GMAT/GRE scores from my current, less-known French institution. Any advice on the weight of university origin versus academic performance for top UK admissions would be greatly appreciated!
Based on the most helpful WSO content, your undergraduate institution's prestige does play a role in admissions to top UK Master's programs like LSE and LBS, but it is not the sole determinant. Here's a breakdown of the key factors to consider:
1. University Origin vs. Academic Performance
2. Strategic Value of Erasmus University Rotterdam (EUR)
3. Key Admissions Factors for LSE/LBS
4. Career Goals and London Placement
5. Recommendation
Ultimately, admissions committees value a combination of academic excellence, test scores, and a well-rounded profile. If you can demonstrate these qualities, the prestige of your undergraduate institution becomes less critical.

Not necessarily.
I think the university name might act as a value add, just like a nicely formatted resume might, but at the end of the day, your grades, scores, and experience should be more influential to the application.
Basically if the school name mattered so much that you should transfer, we should do away with the admissions process and just use alma matter. It is supposed to be a holistic process.
Also it only works to a point, schools like admitting unique students. It might be less of a point for you as a french student, versus a student from a random Ubzekistan school, but it still exists. Basically, just be a rockstar at your current school, get good grades, have fun and hopefully land a nice internship. And for instance being another one of the hundred LSE, RSM, Bocconi students applying could very well work against you;
