Baruch Quant Models and Methods

I recently finished school (May 2010) with an honors degree in accounting. I thought accounting would be a good major at the time, but have decided I am much more interested in finance. Also, while at college I focused on the social aspect and haven't found a job yet. Considering going back to school to reposition myself, network and try to break into finance. I am considering Baruch's Quantitative Methods and Modeling due to the price and location. ( http://zicklin.baruch.cuny.edu/programs/graduate/… ) Has anyone heard of this program, does it provide good opportunities? Would this be the proper way to break into finance and show I have skills for an entry level position? Would apply for the Spring Semester put me at a disadvantage since most recruiters start looking in the fall?

Accounting is a great degree to have if you want to do "finance". Accounting = financial statements, which is really the crux of all wallstreet. If you are not interested in fundamental investing, equity research, or anything along those lines AND you are interested in very quantitative trading/research roles then a heavy quant background would be useful. But for the avg wallstreeter, accounting is an excellent background to have. Learning how to discount cash flows is a ten minute exercise, as someone who was a finance major, I look back and wish I def did not do it. Accounting beats finance everyday of the week in my eyes.... Engineering is prob the most useful degree to have IMHO.....

The QMM would help you in anything other than M&A and PE. Its basically a degree in Operation Research, but the Baruch one is much more flexible with options to take classes in Statistics, Computer Science, and Financial Engineering. This degree might be a game changer for you, if you want to go into a quantitative role, which most roles are almost anywhere in Finance.

Still curious to know whether applying to goto college in the spring would affect getting recruited because I would then be graduating in the fall. I know the fall is when recruiting occurs, so if I was to pull some good grades early in the MS program perhaps it could show talent and increase my chances? I think these interviews usually start November and are for scheduled to start in August.

How does one land a Back or Middle Office job?

you network, there is no magical wand you can swing around to land any job. Even if you have a Phd, no one is going to give you a job without actually knowing you especially given the amount of trust an employer puts in you. For all they know you could a lazy a$$ who loves to learn but not work.
