Best Liberal Arts College for Finance?
Hi there. I am considering liberal arts schools for college. I actually would like to get into i-banking and i think that the financial aid liberal arts schools offer are very tempting and a good way to save. so what schools do you think are the best for i-banking especially in NYC? Also, what to major in? Economics?
williams and amherst. study what you're interested in and get good grades.
Williams and Amherst are the top overall liberal arts schools. They also happen to be the best for finance. Keep in mind they are not easy to get into, at all.
Williams.
What about claremont mckenna?
Hope this help!
Regards
In general here is a quick list I can think of
Good for Finance: Williams, Amherst, Middlebury, Washington and Lee, Hamilton, Colgate, Claremont Bad for Finance: Haverford, Swarthmore, Vassar, Carleton
Don't know much about the others. In general top schools will be fine for finance because they place anywhere. Schools like Hamilton, Colgate, and W&L tend to be preppier which means richer alumni/parents which means job opportunities. Even though schools like Swarthmore, Haverford, and Vassar are ranked higher than Hamilton, Colgate, W&L, they are more academic schools and have less ties to wall street. That's not to say you can't make it, but I'm pretty confident in saying that there are fewer big time alums in Finance at those schools.

Excellent point.
Swarthmore is #3, and you'd think it'd be good for Finance recruiting, but it's horrible because most grads are "save the world" types.
Colgate, Hamilton, Colby place much better.
Actually, those listed as Bad for finance particularly Swarthmore and Haverford are doing better in recruiting into those areas. They now have the Quaker consortium with UPenn so that Swatties, Fords, and Mawrters can take classes at Wharton. In addition, HC has created a Finance affinity group for alumni. The group works with current students to mentor them into getting finance roles. The CCPA has been pushing to show grads that they can do more than expected with a liberal arts degree so alumni with MBAs have been brought back for events for Tri-co (bryn mawr, haverfors, swarthmore) students. The economics department has been doing a better job of connecting students to alumni with events and an econ newsletter. I do agree that tri-co students are still save the world types.
Most people don't know that Dartmouth College is a liberal arts school. You should definitely look into that. Our econ dept is pretty strong as well.
Agreed. I would say that Dartmouth is right up there with Williams/Amherst. It will have a slightly different feel than Williams/Amherst, but it has the Ivy league prestige and a lot of strong alumni connections.
I expect to get dumped on for this, but Macalester college in Saint Paul actually does really well. You'll never hear of it as a top lib arts school for finance because so few kids try to break in from Mac. Those that do place well. The alumni network is tiny but every single one will hustle hard for you.
I would give it a look!
Williams, Amherst, Davidson, Hamilton. Hell, Williams is pretty much Harvard on the street. Art history majors from Williams will SMOKE every finance major from University of Everywhere at Outside-the Ivy League, even if he had a GPA 1 whole point lower.
Don't forget Bowdoin, has had consistent placements into top IB and AM over the past couple years. Alumni network is second to none -- if you can stomach the Maine cold, it offers a terrific undergraduate curriculum and opportunities on Wall Street.
