Business School Odds Wharton Undergrad and Navy Afterwards
Doing this for my older brother... He doesn't think he has a good shot at a top B school, I feel like he does.
Undergrad: Wharton (Class of 2014) GPA: 3.25 GMAT: 730 Work: He did some low key internships with family friends
Joined the Navy Special Warfare (Seals) directly after college, is leaving this winter and will look for B-schools next year after some relaxation.
He thinks that his GPA is too low for Harvard/Stanford/Wharton even with a military background and what seems to me like a good GMAT, and wants to only look at McCombs, Duke, etc. I think he'd be a good candidate at Harvard/Wharton/Stanford due to the Navy and Wharton undergrad. Anyone agree or disagree? I know he might as well apply, but he's the type of guy to not apply if he doesn't think he'd get in..so I'm trying to convince him.
He's leaving the Seals after 2 years of training and just 1 year of serving? Aren't officer contracts usually longer correct me if i'm wrong. Either way with a 3.0+ gpa, 730gmat, and military service he'll have a good chance imo.. definitely doesn't hurt to try

A navy seal in its class is one of those things a B-school loves to brag about. "Look at all of the diverse excellence we bring together into the same room." I think he'd be insane not to apply.
I cannot imagine a single business school in the world turning down a Wharton undergrad turned Navy Seal with a 730 GMAT

Was there any trend to your brother's GPA? Were there mitigating circumstances, for example an illness on semester when his grades really tanked? How were his grades in quant classes?
He says that freshman and sophomore year were about a 3.0 and then junior and senior were 3.5

I agree with the other posters. I think he should apply. Given his strengths and assuming he has a balanced GMAT, he has a shot. If Duke and McCombs support his goals, he should apply to those programs also, but he shouldn't rule out Harvard/Stanford/Wharton because he did poorly during his freshman and sophomore years at Wharton.

He doesn't have to reject himself. Let the schools do it. My $.02.
there were a bunch of former seals at the school i attended (non H/S M7). I'd say M7 should be doable with a chance at H/S
