chances to join top tier mba
hi all
I am now thinking whether to apply for a top notch MBA in US. Here is my background...
management consultant for a year,
and then move to a HK PE (growth cap), i am now a second year analyst. My current company is small that I think no US admission officer would have heard about it.
As for my education bg, i got my first class honor in a local HK university 3 years ago.. then I took my GMAT last year and got 740...
please be frank, is it a waste of time and money for me for applying? i am now 25 yrs old, my friends suggest me to wait for 2 more years, are they correct?
I appreciate your help and let me know if i am unclear about anything.
You would have about 4years work experience before you start right? I'd say you have a reasonable shot for an M7 assuming you have a good story and solid ECs. Having a good brand name for both UG and your job is helpful but not absolutely critical.
Do you mind defining what is m7 and EC?I assume it means top MBA school and extra curriculum. For me, I have been a frequent volunteer in my local community(just because I feel too guilty to work in finance lol) and I was a not-so-good karate player back in colleague.. I don't know how exactly can those make me stand out. To be exact, my firm has only 200m AUM so I am pretty frustrate when I search in LinkedIn that those current MBA candidates are either from GS ms KKR thing... I am just no where close to them in terms of experience
You don't need to be from GS or KKR to get into top schools. Schools want to create a diverse class and diversity of experience is perhaps the most important component of that alongside diversity in geographic background of students. No business school fills up the entire class with people from GS and McKinsey.
If you have a solid app, I don't see why your odds will not be good. I would, however, suggest that you don't rush it and improve your english writing/speaking as this is one area where people from the Pacific often struggle.
I wouldn't even rule out Stanford just based on your work experience though Harvard is definitely prestige-obsessed (Still doesn't mean you'll get in; you probably won't).
thanks for your recommendation... i am fine with verbal communication, and i guess i will ask for help from my friends regarding the essay...
I think you're a match for everything except harvard and stanford, which would be a bit of a reach. I got into Kellogg from non-front office work, you definitely don't need to KKR GS to get into top business schools. Hell, there's plenty of kids at Harvard who worked at General Mills and shit.
I don't think it is a waste of time, but do your research. If you are in Hong Kong, where there are plenty of recent MBAs and students between their first and second years, reach out to them and ask them about their own experiences. Schools are traveling this summer to Asia, and you should go to some events for your target schools to see what admissions officers, school reps, and local alums are saying about their programs
The question is not whether it is a waste of time to apply, the question is whether you are willing to invest in yourself to do the research and find out if business school is the right fit and if it matches your goals.
thanks every one's comment. for me, it is good as my target is wharton (in the past I spent a semester there and I like it). Anyway I will put my focus on wharton, booth or sloan as it seems more realistic.
another question is that my friends advise me to get a promotion (i.e. force my boss to promote me) or get into a larger corporation. is that a must?
