Choosing school
I am currently a first semester student at Indiana university east, trying to get decent grades due to doing bad in high school. I am transferring after this semester and am not sure where to transfer to. I have a few ideas: Indiana University Indianapolis, IU bloom, Miami Ohio. I'm open to other recommendations as well, it can be out of state. Any advice would be appreciated greatly. I would like to end up in Chicago post grad.
IU Bloom is the only one here that would even be close to a semi target. And only in Kelley
usernameladiesman217 Yeah I also wondered the difference between Bloomington Kelley and Indy Kelley. I know both have the IB workshop but other than that I’m not sure
I don't think IU Indy has a Workshop, and if they do, it is not the same. Also, be aware that you almost need 4 years at IU Kelley in order to take advantage of the Workshop. You have to be in Kelley to apply to the IBW during the first semester of sophomore year, so you need to spend a year taking pre-recs and getting into Kelley.
usernameladiesman217Pretty much the only thing I am worried about would be not getting into the IBW and being better off going out of state somewhere
You're right to be worried about not getting into IBW, although if you want to stay in Chicago you're less cooked without IBW than if you're set on BB/EB in NYC.
I'd add Illinois, Wisconsin, WashU, maybe Northwestern or Notre Dame, depends how bad your high school grades were.
If I couldn’t get into Kelley at Bloomington, would UIC be a decent option. That’s just catching my eye due to the Chicago area.
I would do UIUC over UIC all day. UIC is a non target, yes being in Chicago helps a bit with off cycle internships but UIUC has way more resources for you.
to add some color to this: UIC has next to zero IB placements for each graduating class. During the IB hiring frenzy immediately post-covid, one person got an SA offer (I believe it was to RayJ). I don't think anybody else has placed since.
UIUC has the IBA program (highly competitive as well, similar to IBW), Iowa has Hawkinson (much less competitive), Wisconsin and the others listed would be good options as well. IMO even without the banking programs you can force your way in by banging your head against the wall hard enough w/ cold emails so long as there is somewhat of an IB presence at your school. also helps if ur not weird and gay on calls.
Thanks, yeah like I said for IU I’d just be worried about IBW or not even getting into Kelley due to not being a direct admission. I applied a few other places and did get accepted to DePaul but I figured that wouldn’t be worth my time if I to break in to IB.
The only reason I’m doing a semester at iu east was bc of my plan to try for Kelley. But if I didn’t get accepted to Kelley at all I’d be screwed basicially. I also graduated high school a semester early so basically right now I should still have one semester there, but instead I’m doing gen Ed’s at iu east
Since you said you wanted to be in Chicago post-grad, and your HS grades are not so good, we'll assume the Chicago targets (northwestern, uchicago, and, perhaps to some extent, UIUC) are out of the question. I would recommend you cast a wide net and apply to transfer to most of the big 10 schools. I'm assuming you know what the semi-targets are within the midwest (and if you don't there are dozens of threads on this forum identifying them) and hope you get in.
Once you get in, work hard to get into the banking program. If you can, rush the biggest business fraternity on campus immediately because many of the members will give you sauce/tell you exactly what to do to get in the banking program/pass interviews/connect you with current banking program members. If you don't get in to the banking program, and assuming you're going to a B1G school, you can probably still get into IB although it'll be much tougher. Even if you just work your way in to a regional boutique b/c of no banking program, it's still a foot in the door to lateral your way upwards later in ur career
