Corporate Finance ==> Top MBA ==> Corp Dev

How well does a corporate finance job set you up for a top MBA? Considering 3.5+ undergrad GPA Accounting/Finance Major at a state school. Also, would an MsF help the cause?

I feel like corporate finance would give me the work/life balance necessary to do some of the things I want to accomplish, hence also set me apart. I want to jump into Corp Dev or IB later on in my career, but as a more senior professional.

Thanks in advance.

It's going to depend on the program you go into. A lot of F500 have great CF rotational programs, categorized as FLDPs. Those rotational programs historically place really well into top MBAs. Big oil/GE first come to mind.

As long as you perform well at those with the other necessities (GMAT, extracurrics) you'll have a solid shot (though maybe not at H/S/W) at the lower end of the M7. Your "lower" GPA might not place well into the top end of M7. I really don't think you need an MSF if you're planning on doing the MBA.

Well the MsF is already in place, and a good deal. Would the corporate finance path be "looked down" upon versus a banking gig at a boutique or mm?

The reason I'm asking is because I've heard that its tough getting into a top bschool with banking at a relatively unknown firm. The fact that you wont have much time to do anything else adds to that. Also, I'm not really interested in the buy-side much, and would rather do banking long term.

Thanks again.

Hmm...if your end goal is to end up in banking (for the long-term), and you have a shot to get into a boutique or MM, why wouldn't you just start there? You certainly don't need to get an MBA to pursue banking long-term.

From what I know, the top programs (tech, oil, select F500s) make it easier to differentiate oneself from the crowd. But then again, I still don't know why you wouldn't just start out in banking if you want to be in banking long-term. If you don't have the ability to break into banking to begin with, then it's a moot point anyways...

MsF would HURT the cause quite a bit. Getting a top MBA will require you to sell your "story" to adcoms, and it's a tough sell if you already have a masters level degree in business. heck... the MBA would be your third business degree, why even do it?

Money Never Sleeps? More like Money Never SUCKS amirite?!?!?!?

Just a personal goal and mainly this post is just to see some options that are out there.

The reason why I wouldn't want to do just banking and stick with it the rest of my life is because I would want to experience some other things. Even if I did banking, I would want to be at a boutique specializing in a certain field (still unknown). I feel like corp dev or at least working at a company in said field would be the best way to gain the most valuable experience in both knowing the industry and gaining the necessary skills for banking, at least at a senior level.

Would IB then corp fin/corp dev ==> MBA work out a little better? I just feel as though an MBA would open up more doors and I personally enjoy school, especially finance. Even considered a PhD at some point, but that is just too mathematical.
