EDHEC Corporate Finance - online programme - can you talk me out of it?

First of all, I really like this forum and this "talk me out of it" concept, so thanks guys for your time.

I'm looking to do Corporate Finance at EDHEC which is an online programme.

Why?

  • Already working full time - I'm working in Zürich and have a good career path in tech, but I want to expand my knowledge with Finance
  • Don't have Masters - I don't have Masters, that's why I'm looking for a full masters
  • Cannot sacrifice salary - Doing studies in Switzerland would be great, but would also imply taking 20% cut of my salary (over 100k CHF) as there's no full masters programme available to be done during the weekends, only MBA.
  • Want to have good foundation in finance - So based on what I read the programme is a good extension to my 8+ years of experience in tech and management in tech if I would like to move to Senior / C-level position with a full operational responsibility
  • I don't want to do MBA now -  I will do MBA when I will be 40+ years old to fully benefit from the networking opportunities
  • Don't want to travel every other week - Online is not the best, but at least it doesn't require any additional travel & accommodation costs and would have fairly low impact on my life compared to other options (at least that's what I was able to learn from alumni via Linkedin_

I got accepted by them (no surprise given the fee), but want to double check with you before making my final decision.

Thanks

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here are some points to consider before committing to the EDHEC Corporate Finance online program:

Pros:

  1. Flexibility for Full-Time Professionals: The online format allows you to continue working full-time without sacrificing your salary, which aligns with your goal of maintaining financial stability.
  2. Reputation of EDHEC: EDHEC is generally well-regarded in Europe, particularly for finance-related programs. While not at the level of HEC or LBS, it still holds a solid reputation, especially for its balance between corporate finance and financial markets.
  3. Foundation in Finance: If your goal is to build a strong foundation in finance to complement your tech and management experience, this program could provide the necessary theoretical and practical knowledge.
  4. Cost-Effective: Compared to in-person programs that require travel and accommodation, the online format minimizes additional expenses and disruption to your life.

Cons and Considerations:

  1. Networking Opportunities: One of the biggest drawbacks of online programs is the limited networking potential. While EDHEC has a decent alumni network, the online format may not provide the same level of interaction and relationship-building as an in-person program.
  2. Perception of Online Degrees: Despite the growing acceptance of online education, some employers and industries may still view online degrees as less prestigious compared to traditional, on-campus programs. This could be a factor if you're aiming for highly competitive roles or industries.
  3. Program Focus: EDHEC's programs are known to be balanced, but if you're specifically targeting corporate finance, you might want to ensure the curriculum aligns with your career goals. Some programs may lean more towards financial markets or general finance.
  4. Alternative Options: If you're open to exploring other programs, consider part-time or executive master's programs that might offer a hybrid format (e.g., occasional in-person sessions) while still allowing you to work full-time. These could provide better networking opportunities and a stronger brand.

Final Thoughts:

If your primary goal is to gain foundational finance knowledge with minimal disruption to your career and life, the EDHEC online program could be a good fit. However, if networking and the perception of the degree are critical to your long-term goals, you might want to explore other options, such as hybrid or part-time programs at schools with stronger global reputations.
