Fraternities - Educate a non-American
Interested in some insider info – as I'm totally unfamiliar with this American college concept, and I've only ever spent 3 months in Europe, outside my 3rd world home – of course, don't share any info you shouldn't share publicly. I only got curious because of how frequently they get mentioned on WSO—& why the obsession with greek alphabet?
Are their initiation rituals anywhere are brutal as some of those I know where I come from? Do all of them involve real secret worship of some deity/spirit? Are they just Free Masonry–lite (often)—but without the cultic seriousness?? How widespread are they? What does Islam & evangelical/Catholic Christianity view them? How do the full range of American Jewish rabbi opinions view them? Am I just overthinking it – and it's not that serious (considering it's an AMERICAN phenomenon? I know my anti–America unique -feature prejudices show here 😂)? TLDR: Just confirming if it's normal for them to be anywhere as seriousl as Free Masonry or Pyrates / Vikings Confraternity.
