Gap semester/year advice

Hello, I am currently studying in the UNIVERSITY OF CONNECTICUT and planning to transfer out to a stronger business school like WHARTON. If I dont get into any programs should I take a gap semester/tear at a finance internship and if yes where should I look?

Is this a joke? If it’s not, you should DEFINITELY NOT do this: you will end up wasting up to a year of your time barely learning or making money, and most likely (as in 99.99%) not be admitted as a transfer to Wharton coming from UCONN without having some mindblowing extracurriculars

Taking a gap semester or year for a finance internship can be a strategic move, especially if you're aiming to transfer to a top-tier business school like Wharton. Based on the most helpful WSO content, here’s what you should consider:

  1. Gap Semester/Year Decision:

    • If you don’t get into your desired programs, taking a gap semester or year to gain relevant finance experience can strengthen your profile. It demonstrates initiative, practical exposure, and commitment to the field.
    • Ensure that the internship aligns with your long-term goals and adds value to your resume, especially if you're targeting competitive schools or roles.
  2. Where to Look for Internships:

    • Boutique Investment Banks: These firms often provide hands-on experience and are more accessible for students without prior high-profile internships.
    • Private Equity Firms: Even smaller PE firms can offer valuable exposure to deal-making and financial analysis.
    • Corporate Finance Roles: Large corporations often have finance departments where you can gain experience in budgeting, forecasting, and financial planning.
    • Asset Management or Hedge Funds: These roles can provide exposure to portfolio management and investment strategies.
    • Networking: Leverage alumni networks, LinkedIn, and career services to identify opportunities. Networking is crucial for breaking into competitive internships.
  3. Additional Considerations:

    • If you’re extending your graduation timeline, ensure that the gap aligns with your academic and career goals. For example, having a strong internship on your resume can significantly boost your chances when reapplying to top programs.
    • Focus on improving your GPA and building a compelling narrative for your transfer application. Schools like Wharton value a combination of academic excellence, leadership, and relevant experience.

By strategically using a gap semester or year, you can enhance your profile and increase your chances of transferring to a stronger business school or securing a top finance role.

I did a gap year (more like 3 gap years lol). Was a ton of fun but professionally like a quasi disaster that I am still trying to fix

That said, for me it was more about life and things I wanted to do before kicking the bucket while I still had a chance and before I got stuck with a mortgage and debt.

Happy to chat offline if I can be helpful as funny enough I also went to Wharton.

Good luck champ
