HEC MiM or Bocconi Msc Finance

Hey guys,

currently in a bit of a situation as the title suggests. Already accepted Bocconi and made the downpayment. Now surprisingly accepted into HEC MiM.

About me - German national, prior experience in IB/PC and want to pursue a FT career in IB or private markets. Both degrees would be largely credit financed (I have c. 25k saved up), and my COL would be covered by parents and are similar for both options.

Bocconi would be 36k for two years, where you can do internships in the semester breaks. I do not speak italian.

HEC would be 58k for two years. Internships would need to be done in a gap year between the first and second year, effectively making it a three year degree. I speak french well enough to maybe make some french friends.

My goal is FT IB/private markets in DACH, and trying to make my profile as attractive as possible to find a legitimately good position.

What would you do? How are these universities perceived in your opinion, especially with regards to my goals?

Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:

  1. Perception in the Job Market:

    • For your goal of securing a full-time role in IB or private markets in the DACH region, both HEC Paris and Bocconi are highly regarded. However, HEC Paris has a stronger reputation in the DACH region and is generally seen as a top-tier institution for finance roles in Europe. Its alumni network is particularly strong in France and across Europe, including DACH.
    • Bocconi is also highly respected, especially in Italy and Southern Europe, but it may not carry the same weight in the DACH region as HEC Paris.
  2. Program Structure and Flexibility:

    • Bocconi MSc Finance: The program allows you to complete internships during semester breaks, which could help you gain relevant experience without extending the duration of your studies. This is a significant advantage if you want to enter the job market sooner.
    • HEC MiM: The program requires a gap year for internships, effectively making it a three-year degree. While this extends your time in school, it provides a structured opportunity to gain substantial work experience, which could enhance your profile for IB or private markets.
  3. Language and Networking:

    • Your ability to speak French gives you an edge at HEC Paris, as it will help you integrate into the local culture and network effectively. This could be particularly valuable for building connections in the DACH region and beyond.
    • Not speaking Italian might limit your networking opportunities at Bocconi, especially if you aim to leverage local connections.
  4. Cost Considerations:

    • Bocconi is more affordable (€36k vs. €58k for HEC), and the shorter duration (two years vs. three years) means you could start earning sooner, reducing the overall financial burden.
    • However, HEC’s higher cost might be justified by its stronger brand recognition in the DACH region and the potential for higher-quality internships during the gap year.
  5. Final Recommendation:

    • If your primary goal is to maximize your attractiveness for IB or private markets in the DACH region, HEC Paris MiM is likely the better choice due to its stronger reputation, alumni network, and alignment with your career goals.
    • However, if the financial burden and extended duration of the HEC program are significant concerns, Bocconi MSc Finance is still an excellent option, especially given its flexibility with internships and lower cost.

Ultimately, the decision depends on how much weight you place on cost and program duration versus reputation and networking opportunities.

If you want to work in finance and not consulting, even if HEC MiM is one of the best programs in the world, the MS in Finance at Bocconi is the deal (it would be diferent if it had been the HEC MiF).

There are many Bocconi's alumni in London, it's more an university than business school, therefore very rigorous. I would do the MS in Finance at Bocconi, I only know goated students who do it and they are REALLY good.

I know a lot of Bocconi guys who lend summers in London and in DACH, in BB too ("a lot" in reality).
