How are US MiM students finding jobs?
I'm a prospective student looking into these programmes and I don't understand how the average salary after graduation is so high. I'm confused as to how non-business students with no WE are landing $80K consulting roles after a 10 month program given so much of the American job market is based off of undergraduate internship experience. The schools all point to their career coaches but, even then, students need to find jobs themselves and the US job market is pretty bleak. I'm curious because I have non-business degree and no relevant experience, so I don't want to make a misguided decision. Does anyone have any insight?
Based on the most helpful WSO content, here's what you need to know:
Career Services and Networking: Many MiM (Master in Management) programs in the US heavily emphasize career services, including resume workshops, mock interviews, and networking events. These programs often have strong ties with consulting firms and other industries, which can help students secure interviews even without prior work experience.
Recruitment Focus: Consulting firms, including MBB (McKinsey, Bain, BCG) and tier-2 firms, often recruit from top MiM programs because they value the analytical and problem-solving skills taught in these programs. The structured recruitment pipelines at these firms can help students bypass the traditional reliance on undergraduate internships.
High Demand for Analytical Skills: The consulting industry values the skill set developed in MiM programs, such as data analysis, strategic thinking, and communication. These skills are transferable and in demand, which can justify the high starting salaries.
Exit Opportunities and Compensation: While MiM graduates may not have prior work experience, the consulting industry offers robust training programs to bridge the gap. Starting salaries for consultants, even at non-MBB firms, can range from $80K to $100K, as seen in WSO's consulting compensation reports.
Program Reputation and Alumni Networks: The reputation of the MiM program and its alumni network plays a significant role. Top programs often have alumni in influential positions who can help open doors for recent graduates.
US Job Market Realities: While the US job market can be challenging, MiM programs often attract international students who are willing to work in various locations or industries, increasing their chances of landing roles. Additionally, consulting firms often sponsor visas, making them attractive employers for MiM graduates.
If you're considering an MiM program, focus on schools with strong placement records, robust career services, and a proven track record of placing graduates in consulting or other high-paying roles.
