IM jobs: does "CFA® or MBA" really mean just that?

Fellow monkeys -

I know the "CFA® or MBA" question has been beaten to death already, but wanted to ask a specific question about investment management recruiting.

I've spent 4 years post-undergrad in banking now, but want to move into an IM role. To help in that regard I've been working through the CFA® program (taking level 3 in two weeks), and was accepted round 2 into one of the M7 schools.

Now that tuition deposits are coming due and I'm looking through course offerings for next year, it's pretty clear that there's a lot of overlap with my undergrad degree in business + the CFA® exams.

So my question to you all is: when I see IM job openings state that "CFA® or MBA" is required, does that mean that either one individually qualifies you - end of story, or that someone with both will have a leg up in the process? Also would be interested to hear opinions on the feasibility of lateralling into one of the large asset managers (BlackRock, etc.) outside of an MBA recruiting process.

Maybe this is just a case of cold feet now that the checkbook is actually coming out, but have at it....

obviously MBA will help even though the classes overlap. I'm guessing that the only classes that overlap are probably the core finance classes, all of the electives that you will take (primarily in the second half of your program) should not have much CFA material and be based mostly on leadership skills etc.

If you got accepted to top MBA, I would highly recommend going, whats money anyway when youre just gonna be buried breathless underground soon (unless of course you go the creamation route). I am taking lvl 2 CFA this year and starting MBA in Aug.

Downtown, I work for a pension, so I see countless numbers of these AM books and people come my way. From all of the groups I've seen, Wellingon, Pyramis/ Fidelity, PIMCO, all of their analysts and PMs have both an MBA/ Masters in Finance and a CFA.The analysts at these shops are almost exclusively M7, with banking/ ER experience and CFA/MBA. I would imagine not having one or the other would put you at a steep disadvantage.
