Impact of switching job from T2 consulting to SMB/start-up?
tldr:
Is it still possible for me to successfully apply to business schools this coming fall (to start in 2022) even if I switch jobs from consulting to a start-up-like company right now (leaving me seven months before R1 application deadlines)?
Background:
I currently work in T2 consulting but recently received a job offer to be a strategy analyst at a small (~50 employees), growth-stage (not quite start-up) fintech/media company.
I have been planning for a while now to apply to MBA programs (M7, T15) this coming summer for a Fall 2022 start date. I have 1.5 YOE in my current consulting role and so would have 3 YOE upon matriculation.
General background:
-
T2 consulting (e.g., Deloitte, Accenture, Oliver Wyman)
-
Undergraduate School: e.g., Cornell, Duke, Northwestern, Rice
-
Major: Computer Engineering
-
Race: South Asian (US Citizen)
-
Sex: M
-
GPA: 3.35
-
GMAT: 740 (48Q, 42V)
-
ECs: Board member on non-profit, firm initiatives, etc.
Job Offer:
I am absolutely done with being a consultant and my post-MBA goal is to do product management or corporate strategy in the tech industry. For those reasons, this current offer seems like a great fit because it has a lot of overlap with those two functions and I could gain some experience in them before starting an MBA. I will also be the primary strategy analyst for the company, giving me the opportunity to have a big impact on the organization. I can also imagine that this role could serve as a better narrative for my goals when applying to MBA programs.
I really want to take this offer, but I also don't see myself working long-term at this new company either, and I am still committed to getting an MBA.
Impact on MBA Timeline:
Is it possible for me to switch jobs right now and still apply to MBA programs later this fall (in about 7-10 months), or should I stick it out at my current company and proceed with my original plan? How might this impact my chances of getting into a top MBA program?
Pros of switching...
-
Better and more relevant role for my long-term goals
-
Gain experience in product and strategy functions at a growth-stage company
-
Opportunity to have a great impact
-
Same salary as current role, permanently remote work, good culture, etc.
-
Easier time recruiting for PM out of MBA due to more relevant experience?
Cons of switching...
-
Company is not at all a brand-name (i.e., no one would generally have ever heard of it)
-
May be harder to get letters of recommendation after just seven months (or would need to get them from my current role)
-
Decreased odds of getting into an M7 or T15?
Thanks for any advice or insights anyone can provide!
