In praise of Essay Snark

I have never started a thread praising an MBA admissions consulting service, but I'm going to make an exception here. So a few friends highly recommended this service called Essay Snark. They provide a lot of a la carte services which are pretty reasonably priced. I ended up paying $100 for their comprehensive profile review, and boy, was it comprehensive. After submitting a questionnaire, within 2 days, I received a 12-page PDF file that broke down my strengths and weaknesses and delved into an analysis of each. It was brutally honest, insightful, and on the point. A word of caution: it is only for the thick-skinned. They're not going to BS around, in hopes of making you feel better, so you can sign up for their services.

I HIGHLY recommend essay snark for anyone looking to apply to b-schools and need an objective assessment of where they stand.

CaliforniaAnalyst$100 for 12 pages of honest, insightful and straight to the point comprehensive mba assessment - i think the rest mba app consulting biz gona go bankrupt soon
hmmm looks like they'll need elite boutique restructuring advisers - will this create more dealflow for me if i'm on an EB restructuring team, and will that help my MBA chances?

acrew09I'll second Brady - I also got the comprehensive profile review. I found it very helpful in thinking about where/when to apply and how to present my story.

To acrew, Brady, or anyone else with Essay Snark experience - Would you recommend the comprehensive profile review to identify gaps/weaknesses a few years before applying? I'm looking to apply in 2-3 years. Not sure if this is best suited for those 1 year from applying. I spoke with some admissions consultants for their free reviews and got mostly generic "it depends" type of advice. I'd appreciate brutally honest advice sooner rather than making mistakes down the road.

I think its more suited for helping those 1 year from applying. It was helpful for me to look at what was reasonable for target/reach schools and to get an idea of what I should probably focus on in my apps. If you're 2-3 years out, you'll probably have another job which could not only affect your chances, but might significantly change your messaging on what you want to do post-MBA - something they base the profile evaluation on.

That said, some of the advice that EssaySnark gave me would have been helpful to know 2-3 years from applying. For example, they pointed out international work experience as a good differentiator, which is kind of hard to get if you're not looking several years out.
