Is a BComm needed for Canadian IB

I want to go into IB and i'm looking at degrees and a BComm doesn't seem like it's for me - I don't want to limit myself and i feel like it might, especially if i want to work outside of North America. Is it possible to break into IB with a degree like Maths or Econ from a top school like UBC or UofT or is business school needed?

Yes it's certainly possible and quite a few people have done this, but it is a lot more common for Canadian banks to recruit from the business school programs whether it be a BComm or a BBA. It sounds like you're deciding between programs right now, so I assume that you're still in high school or are at the very least in your freshman year thinking about a degree switch? In any case, I wouldn't base your school / program selection solely on its prospects of landing a job in a very specific area. If I were in your shoes I would choose a school or program based on where you think you're going to have the best experience both in terms of lifestyle and what you think you'll like learning about. There are a lot of pros and cons of choosing a business degree, but whether it helps you break into IB or not shouldn't be at the forefront of your decision making process.

thank you!! yes i’m in high school in the U.K. but a dual citizen, from the job side of things the u.k. is looking better for me but i think canada will be worth it for the experience, just wasn’t sure if not doing a bcomm would set me back massively because it’s not something i want to do

US Schools are too expensive - im a dual UK/Canada citizen - but in most Canadian schools im considered a domestic student so can afford to pay tuition - the only business schools i can afford out of pocket are UBC and UofT though so was just wondering if the experience of living in a different country/going to a top Canadian school would be worth giving up a U.K. target uni
