Is Cornell Hotel a Target?

I was recently accepted to the Cornell hotel school and was wondering if I could transition from it IB. Would I be too pigeonholed into hospitality? Would being in the Dyson school provide an advantage?

Cornell's Hotel School is not traditionally considered a "target" for investment banking (IB), but it does have a strong reputation and can still provide opportunities for transitioning into IB. Based on the most helpful WSO content:

  1. Transitioning to IB from the Hotel School: While the Hotel School is more hospitality-focused, Cornell as a whole is a target school for IB. Many students from non-Dyson programs, including the Hotel School, have successfully transitioned into IB roles. Networking, maintaining a strong GPA, and joining finance-related clubs or organizations on campus can significantly enhance your chances.

  2. Pigeonholed into Hospitality?: You won't necessarily be pigeonholed into hospitality. However, you may need to work harder to demonstrate your interest and skills in finance. Taking finance-related electives, participating in finance clubs, and securing relevant internships can help you stand out.

  3. Dyson School Advantage: Dyson students may have a slight edge due to the program's focus on business and finance. They often have earlier access to finance-related courses (e.g., financial accounting) and benefit from grade flexibility and faculty connections. That said, Cornell's overall reputation and resources mean that students from any school within Cornell can break into IB with the right preparation.

In summary, while Dyson might provide a slight advantage, being in the Hotel School does not preclude you from pursuing IB. Focus on building a strong finance profile through coursework, internships, and networking.

Unless you’re talking to someone from Cornell I don’t think anyone really looks past “Cornell” unless it’s something like engineering.

The opposite. I would see it as a strong benefit in addition to the school name.

My original post was neither a slight to Cornell nor engineering.

Cornell Engineering is t10 in the nation, academics is difficult asf, most people go to tech from there, so there is selection bias involved
