is swtiching career before mba a good choice?

sorry for being repretitive. i have posted a similar topic before but this one is a bit different.

im currently in IT consulting but want to get into finance (i know its almost impossible but wanna give it a shot). as some of you have mentioned here, getting promoted is essential when it comes to admissions at top mba schools.

one route would be to stick with IT consulting, get promoted, and go to top 10 MBA (if i can get in) and switch to sell side finance after the MBA (buy side probably wont be a possibility b/c of no finance exp). this one might make a good essay story b/c im mostly doing IT strategy work (i understand that its not comparable to pure startegy) and virtually half of the people in our division went to top 5 MBA.

the other path is to take the CFA Level I now and try to find an ER/AM opportunity pre-MBA which might end up hurting my chances of getting into top mba school b/c of no promotion.

end goal is tech focused hf/pe/am.

which route would you say is better overall?

thanks.

neither will hurt your chances IMO, as long as you have a good story behind either path. For instance, you can use an MBA to re-brand yourself and focus your recruiting efforts solely in finance. At the same time, having both IT consulting and finance experience prior to MBA also makes you a strong candidate (as long as you can weave together a good story).

either route should do the trick, depends more on your personal situation and how badly you want and how easily you can break into finance.

cheers.
